Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra to be new RBI Governor

Secretary (Revenue), Ministry of Finance, Sanjay Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) with effect from December 11, 2025.

The six-year tenure of Das, the second-longest serving RBI Governor, will end on Tuesday.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Sanjay Malhotra, IAS (RJ: 1990), Secretary, Department of Revenue, as Governor, Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years from 11.12.2024,” a note issued by the Department of Personnel & Training, Government of India read.

Sanjay Malhotra, Secretary (Revenue), Ministry of Finance, will succeed Shaktikanta Das as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) starting December 11, 2024.
Das, the second-longest-serving RBI Governor, will complete his six-year tenure on Tuesday.
The Appointments Committee has approved Malhotra’s three-year term, as per a government notification.

Sanjay Malhotra, who will be the 26th Governor of the country’s central bank, is a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer from the Rajasthan Cadre. A graduate in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur, he also holds a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Princeton University, US.

During his career, Malhotra has served across various sectors like finance, taxation, power, information technology and mines.
