Konami and Bloober Team’s fancy remake of survival horror classic Silent Hill 2 appears to be a big hit, with the new game selling over a million copies in less than a week. Finally, fans have some good news after years of not-great sequels and poor management of the franchise.

Silent Hill 2 was released on October 6 via a pre-order early access period on PS5 and PC. Many, myself included, were nervous about the Bloober-developed remake of the beloved and critically acclaimed Silent Hill 2, first released on PlayStation 2 in 2001. However, it turned out to be a fantastic update that both respects the original game while making (mostly) smart changes to modernize it. And it appears at least 999,999 other people agree with me.

On October 16, Konami tweeted that the Silent Hill 2 remake had sold over 1 million copies. According to the tweet, this data is from October 11, which was only five days after Silent Hill 2 went on sale via early access pre-orders. It’s also only three days after it launched for everyone else on October 8. In other words, it didn’t take long for this new horror remake to hit the million copies sold milestone.

In fact, according to Daniel Ahmad, director of research & insights at Niko Partners, this is much, much faster than the original Silent Hill 2. That 2001 PS2 game took a month to reach a million. It’s likely that this means Silent Hill 2‘s remake is the fastest-selling game in the long-running horror franchise.

Last year, Konami’s Silent Hill: Ascensionan odd live-streamed narrative thing —was being ripped apart by fans and critics for being a mostly boring and bad experience. Before that, Konami had done little with the franchise beyond some Silent Hill-themed slot machines and 2012’s Downpour, the last main entry in the series which received middling reviews. And now, the Silent Hill 2 remake has helped turn things around for the struggling franchise. The question is: will Konami be able to keep up the momentum?
