Minister vows to curb digital misinformation

ISLAMABAD:

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Wednesday highlighted the irony that, despite the growth of digital space, there are no robust mechanisms to authenticate and verify information.

Speaking at a ceremony for the “Digital Sahafat: Training Programme for Pakistani Journalists,” he emphasized the severe damage caused by fake news, disinformation, and misinformation.

“For a fragile economy like ours, the impact of fake news can inflict immeasurable loss,” he said.

While discussing the pros and cons of digital media, Tarar also expressed concern over the lack of effective measures to counter the increasing use of digital platforms by terrorist organizations.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to curbing the menace of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

He pointed out that vulnerable groups and minorities are often targeted through digital media as part of certain hidden agendas.

Tarar also stressed that progress in the country is impossible without digital advancement.

He urged that television channels and newspapers must have proper editorial systems, regular training programs, and well-equipped personnel to handle the flow and verification of information.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s determination to combat fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
