FC Barcelona Secures Provisional Approval against La Liga wishes to Register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor

Barcelona has received provisional approval from the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD) to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, pending a final decision on the club’s appeal against La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

This decision allows the players to compete temporarily while the council reviews Barcelona’s case against La Liga and RFEF’s initial rejection of their registration.

Joan Laporta, Barcelona’s president, was recorded by Catalan public TV TV3 celebrating the decision, which came too late for Olmo and Victor to participate in Wednesday’s Spanish Supercopa semi-final against Athletic Club.

Barcelona went on to win by 2-0, meaning the pair will now be eligible for selection in Sunday’s final against either Real Madrid or Mallorca.

The Spanish Football Federation and La Liga had earlier rejected Barcelona’s request to register Olmo and Victor on Saturday, citing the club’s failure to meet wage cap restrictions.

The CSD’s precautionary measure suspends this decision and maintains the validity of the players’ licenses until the appeal process concludes.

In a statement, the CSD clarified that the provisional measure would remain in effect until a final resolution is reached. La Liga acknowledged receipt of the resolution on Wednesday but expressed its disagreement and is reviewing the decision for potential appeals.

Olmo, a €60 million signing from RB Leipzig, and Victor, a €3 million signing from Girona, were only registered for the first half of the season under special exemptions due to Barcelona’s financial constraints.

Barcelona reportedly generated additional revenue by selling VIP boxes at their under-construction stadium, but the paperwork for these measures was submitted after La Liga’s deadline.

La Liga stated that although Barcelona met the financial requirements after the expiration of the players’ licenses, existing regulations prohibit re-registering players at the same club within the same season.

The club has argued that the rule is outdated and should not apply given their compliance with financial fair play rules during the transfer window.

The pair will be available for selection until the CSD delivers a definitive ruling on Barcelona’s appeal, the deadline for which is 7th April 2025.
