Calgary police issue dangerous person alert in relation to double homicide investigation

Calgary police issued a dangerous person alert for the city on Monday, linked to a double homicide investigation the police began on Sunday night.

The alert warned Calgarians about Benedict Kaminski, 38, whom it described as a dangerous man armed with a firearm in areas of northwest Calgary or northwest of the city limits.

Police are linking Kaminski to the deaths a man and a woman who were discovered in different locations in the city’s northwest on Sunday night.

Police responded to reports of a person in medical distress, at the 0 to 100 block of Kincora Grove N.W. in Calgary’s Kincora neighbourhood, around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. When officers arrived, police say they found a man in his 70s who was dead.

Later on Sunday, at 11:15 p.m., as police continued to investigate, they found a second victim whom they believe to be the man’s daughter. The woman was in her 30s and was found in the 300 block of Tuscany Ridge Heights N.W. in the city’s Tuscany neighbourhood.

On Monday morning, police said they believed both deaths were targeted and domestic in nature.

Investigators are looking for a black Nissan Pathfinder with the Alberta licence plate CLN-5276, which they believe was driven by Kaminski.

Police say Kaminski is approximately six feet tall with brown and grey hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a grey, red and white T-shirt.

Police added they believe Kaminski could be in northwest Calgary or near the Bearspaw area, which is northwest of the city, and asked residents of Bearspaw, Rocky Ridge, Tuscany and surrounding areas to be on alert and to not open the door to strangers.

Autopsies for both bodies are scheduled for Friday.
