BCD Travel surveyed factors that shape corporate air travel, revealing that convenience and pricing are key influences. The survey drew responses from over 1,300 business travelers who used air travel in the past year.
The survey found that many travelers prioritize convenience. Close to half of the respondents paid for seat selection, while others would pay for checked and carry-on luggage if not included in the fare. Priority boarding, extra legroom, and fast-tracked security were other popular choices. Half the travelers often purchased fully or partially refundable tickets, offering flexibility in case of travel disruptions or altered plans. However, ticket price was a significant factor, with 40% choosing the cheapest option, regardless of the cancellation or exchange policy.
Arrival/departure time or flight duration influenced 71% of travelers when choosing a flight, and employer policy influenced 49%. Price was a significant consideration for 51% of respondents. Most travelers flew for trips that lasted between two and six days, and the majority flew economy class on short-haul flights.
Sustainability was not a primary concern for most travelers. However, flying direct was the top behavior (66%), and very few selected flights with the lowest carbon emissions. Two-thirds of travelers admitted they rarely considered environmental factors if sustainable choices were more expensive.
Over two-thirds of respondents expressed satisfaction with their company’s travel policy and preferred suppliers. However, one-fifth reported challenges with user-unfriendly booking tools, low service class allowance, or encouragement of low-cost airlines. Travelers were most upset about delays, cancellations, inconvenient schedules, and uncomfortable seats.
BCD Travel emphasizes the potential of a travel policy to influence employee well-being and satisfaction. By understanding travelers’ needs, businesses can adapt their travel programs to balance cost control, traveler care, and sustainable practices.
