A New Futuristic Sport Is Being Added To NBA 2K 25

A new futuristic sports game has been revealed by 2K Games. And weirdly, this new game, Gravity Ball, will be playable in NBA 2K25 later this month as paid DLC.

On October 16, 2K announced Gravity Ball, a “fast-paced online multiplayer game” that will be accessible through NBA 2K25′s The City hub as a paid 8$ DLC add-on. Gravity Ball is set to launch on October 18. While past NBA 2K games have featured mini-games, like a kart racer, Gravity Ball appears to be a more involved mode that reminds me of some of the games found within Fortnite, like Festival and Rocket Racing.

According to Visual Concepts president Greg Thomas, Gravity Ball was developed by Visual Concepts South, the same studio behind last year’s Lego 2K Drive. In a blog post, Thomas explained that Gravity Ball started out as a “passion project” at the studio and quickly became popular internally at Visual Concepts.

“We’ve had so much fun playing amongst ourselves, we knew we needed to find a way to share it with you. Leveraging NBA 2K25’s platform has given us that opportunity,” said Thomas.

Thomas described Gravity Ball as a “mashup of American-Gladiators-meets-futuristic-basketball-meets-paintball,” and added that it’s “pure off-the-walls mayhem.”

As for why Gravity Ball exists and will be released through NBA 2K25, Thomas explained that every game studio wants to “try new things” and bring “new fun” experiences to players.

“Good concepts deserve a chance to find an audience and shouldn’t die on the cutting room floor. We hope you enjoy this game as much as we do and look forward to your feedback,” said Thomas.

The reaction to Gravity Ball has been…not great. Across Twitter and YouTube, many players aren’t happy with paid DLC being added to NBA 2K25 and are also upset that the basketball sim needs more updates and fixes, but is instead getting a DLC game. There were also some fans who criticized Gravity Ball as 2K desperately trying to turn the basketball game into Fortnite.

It will be curious to see if these superfans on social media represent the opinions of most NBA 2K25 players or if, as is often the case, most of the game’s players aren’t online all the time and will be happy to check out Gravity Ball on October 18.
