Critical Role Teases Vox Machina and Mighty Nein Shows

Every new season of Legend of Vox Machina pits the titular adventuring team against bigger and bigger threats. After taking on a vampire power couple, raiders, and a couple of dragons, the gang’s got to tangle with the remaining dragons of the Chroma Conclave and snag more Vestiges that’ll help take the beasts down. But Vox Machina’s plans never go as expected, and a new clip from San Diego Comic-Con keeps that traditionn alive and well.

The party’s Vestige hunt this season takes them to the city of Ank’Harel, stationed inside the continent of Marquet. While teaming with their merchant friend Gilmore, they’ve got no choice but to book it from the city’s guards. Not easy, as it turns out; Ank’Harel is quite big and the Hand of Ord are more than ready to chase the group down. Longtime series fans know Marquet becomes the primary setting for Critical Role’s current campaign “Bells Hells,” which might get its own animated treatment down the line. While talking to Variety, Grog’s voice actor Travis Willingham teased that this season would present “the larger aspect of Exandria,” and help expand the animated show’s scope.

Helping with that endeavor is its sister series focused on the Mighty Nein series. While that show’s release may be a while off, the panel featured an animatic showing the first meeting between Willingham’s warlock Fjord and Laura Bailey’s cleric Jester. Unlike Vox Machina, which began with the party having been together for some time, it looks like Mighty Nein will show that campaign’s characters coming together for the very first time. Nein is set 30 years after Vox Machina’s story ends, and Willingham said to expect the latter’s future seasons to “set the base” for Nein’s stories. For him, planting these seeds is part of the fun of this adaptation.

“Both shows will be connected by little red chaos strings,” he teased. “We know our audience expects [easter eggs], and we know it’s our chance to improve on things. Hopefully, our fans love it.”

We may not know when Mighty Nein is coming out, but Vox Machina third season begins on October 3.
