Spain’s estimated HCPI indicates 2.9% annual variation in May 2023

In May 2023, the estimated annual variation rate of Spain’s harmonised consumer price index (HCPI) stood at 2.9 per cent, nine tenths less than the one registered in the previous month. For its part, the estimated monthly variation of the country’s HCPI is -0.2 per cent. The HCPI is a statistical indicator whose objective is to provide a common average of the inflation that allows conducting international comparisons.

Spain’s estimated annual inflation of the consumer price index (CPI) in May 2023 is 3.2 per cent, according to the flash indicator prepared by the National Statistics Institute (NSI).

In May 2023, Spain’s HCPI annual variation rate was 2.9 per cent, down by 0.9 per cent from the previous month.
The country’s CPI annual inflation in May 2023 is estimated to be 3.2 per cent, a decrease of 0.9 per cent compared to April.
Consumer prices in May showed a -0.1 per cent rate compared to April, based on the leading indicator of the CPI.

The indicator provides a preview of the CPI which, if confirmed, would mean a decrease of nine tenths in its annual rate, since in April this variation was 4.1 per cent. This development is mainly due to the decrease in fuel prices, which increased in May of the previous year.

The estimated annual variation rate of underlying inflation (general index excluding non-processed food and energy products) decreased five tenths, to 6.1 per cent. Consumer prices registered a rate of -0.1 per cent in May compared to April, as per the leading indicator of the CPI.
